India’s first monorail inaugurated in Mumbai

India’s first monorail service was
inaugurated by the Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj chavan on 1 February
2014 in Mumbai. The First phase of Mumbai Monorail is comprised of 8.9 km long Wadala-Chembur section.
The first phase was constructed at the cost of 1900 crore rupees which have
seven stations. It will operate between 7 am and 3 pm at an interval of 15
minutes initially. The fully
air-conditioned monorail’s minimum fare will be five rupees while maximum
fare will be twenty rupees.
The monorail
service will have four coaches, which will ferry about 2500 passengers .The
traveling time between Wadala and Chembur will be reduced from 40 minutes to
nearly 21 minutes at present. Mumbai Mono rail will display itself in three colours green, pink and sky blue.
Monorail will have a smart card facility available like Delhi Metro.

The Mumbai Mono rail project has been
implemented in two phases. The first phase comprise the Wadala- Chembur where
as the second phase will be extended to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk in South
Mumbai. The Project is implemented by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development
Authority with an association of Larsen and Toubro and a Malaysian
infrastructure firm Scomi Engineering.
Union Government raised quota of subsidised LPG cylinders to 12

Union Government raised the quota of
subsidised LPG cylinders to 12 cylinders per household in a year on 30 January
2014.The hike will be effective from April 2014. Union government had also decided
to put on hold linking the Aadhaar platform to the Direct Benefit Transfer of
LPG (DBTL) scheme.
However,
households will be entitled to get one cylinder extra, beyond the quota of nine
cylinders, in February 2014 and March 2014. One cylinder will be given to a
consumer every month. The hiked subsidised LPG quota will cost 5000 crore
rupees more in subsidy to the exchequer annually. 99 crore people will be
benefitted from the hike.
Under the DBTL scheme, consumers in as many
as 289 districts in 18 states were getting the subsidy amount directly credited
to their bank accounts.
